Walking in here tonight, life is unfair...
Maybe you lost your job
Or you haven't found a spouse yet
Or...
Objection to Christianity: It's not fair
Common belief: Unfair = Untrue
You're going to bump into people who hold to this, so you need to carry this message to them
This objection stops you from asking the more important question: Is it true?
We can't even agree on what is fair...
Illustration: Moms ask their kids about the proper consequence, "Well, what do you think I'd fair?"
We don't want "fair" because that means we get what we deserve, and fair says "you pay"
We want mercy not fair
v.6: when we were powerless, Christ died for the ungodly
Because we were so ungodly, Christ had to die (and we don't even believe we are ungodly)
All we know is imperfect people, and then we compare ourselves to each other
The standard isn't Mother Teresa; it's God
We don't even want to call sin "sin", we call it a "mistake"
A mistake is messing up on your geometry homework
A mistake ISN'T having an affair or cheating on your taxes; that's SIN!
v.7: when we despised Him, He died for us -- it's not fair
It's not fair, because you could never get there
It's unbelievable, it's extraordinary!
It's not about keeping commandments; you just have to accept what's been given to you
It's not fair on purpose
Fair says, "you mess up, you pay"
Jesus says, "you mess up, I'll pay"
It wasn't fair to God
If you died today, stood before God and He asked you why He should let you into heaven, what's the first thing that comes to your mind?
For believers, when you see the broken world around you, just because something seems unfair, it doesn't mean it's untrue
The message to all who receive the blood of Christ is that God is coming back to set all things right
Closing:
If you are a believer, may this sharpen you to encounter an unsaved world, and extend Christ to them, even if you can't answer all their questions
If you haven't made that decision, the offer stands before you. If you don't believe it tonight, God's promise will be here tomorrow, but He doesn't promise you tomorrow...
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast." (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV)
"If you declare with your mouth, 'Jesus is Lord,' and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9 NIV)
"Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." (Acts 4:12 NIV)
